Why a comparison site remembers things
A cookie is a small text record a website stores in your browser and reads back on a later request. It cannot run code and it cannot see anything outside the browser holding it. What it can do is remember, and on a site built to hold a search for a car in Heraklion steady while you compare the results, memory is the entire point: without it the collection date you entered would vanish on every page load.

Cookies that end with the visit, and cookies that stay
Most of the strictly necessary group lives only as long as the browser window: close it and they are gone. The other three categories are persistent, each carrying the expiry shown in the table, and the browser removes them when that date arrives. None extends its own life in the background; an expired cookie is created again only if you return and its category is still permitted.
The one third party
The search results and the reservation window come from LocalRent. Its script is not part of the page as it first loads; it is fetched at the moment you open a booking, and only from then can it set cookies of its own, which is what the referral row records. There is no advertising network, no social media widget and no tracking pixel anywhere on carhireheraklion.com. If an outside service is ever added, it will be given a row in the table above and named on this page.
Turning cookies off in your browser
Cookies are turned off in the browser rather than on this site, and a setting made there reaches every site you visit. In current versions the relevant screen is:
- Chrome: Settings, then Privacy and security, where third party cookies and site data have their own entries
- Safari on a Mac: Settings, then Privacy, where cross-site tracking prevention and cookie blocking sit side by side
- Safari on an iPhone or iPad: the cookie controls are in the device's own Settings app under Safari, not inside the browser
- Firefox: Settings, then Privacy and Security, under Enhanced Tracking Protection
- Edge: Settings, then Cookies and site permissions, where stored cookies can also be cleared in one go
Blocking the preferences, analytics or referral categories has no cost to you here: the site forgets your language, we lose the figures that tell us which guide needs rewriting, and a supplier may fail to attribute a booking that began here. Blocking strictly necessary cookies is a different matter, because the search form and the booking window depend on them, and without them this becomes a site you can read but not use.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
A Do Not Track header can still be switched on in several browsers. Nobody ever agreed what a site should do on receiving one, so in practice almost nobody acts on it, and carhireheraklion.com is no exception: the header changes nothing here, and the browser settings above are what actually works. Global Privacy Control is a younger signal with a firmer legal footing in some jurisdictions; if it gains a settled meaning in European Union law we will honour it and say so on this page.
Updates and questions
We update this page whenever a category is added or removed or a provider changes, and the date beneath the title tells you which version you are reading. What happens to personal data once collected, and the rights you hold over it, are set out in the privacy policy.
